Teaching for musical understanding
I teach piano, music theory and composition through Crescendo Music School. My teaching is grounded in the idea that music is something to understand, create and communicate, not simply reproduce. Lessons connect technique, notation, theory, listening and musical decision-making, helping students understand not only how to play or create music, but why it works.
Graded exams can provide useful structure and clear milestones, and I support students who want to work towards them. To date, 100% of my students who have taken graded exams with me have achieved Distinction. Exams are treated as one route within a broader musical education rather than the sole measure of progress.
My teaching is informed by academic research into music education and by continually reflecting on how different people learn. Methods are adapted to the individual, with attention to confidence, access, learning needs and the wider experience of developing a new skill.
Where appropriate, learning can also extend into performance and ensemble experiences, giving students the chance to put their skills into practice, build confidence, meet other musicians and develop a sense of musical community.
